Abdullah Almalki is a Canadian who was detained and tortured in Syria, much like Maher Arar, but whose subsequent inquiry has been held behind closed doors, denying him any kind of explanation or answer. Disturbing questions remain: Did Canadian intelligence agencies actually play a role in causing him to be detained, questioned, and tortured in the first place? Why did Canadian intelligence agencies send questions to Syrian torturers knowing that these questions would impede efforts to release him? Why are Abdullah and his lawyers barred from proceedings designed to determine why he was tortured?
WPIRG is hosting Abdullah Almalki at UW to speak about his experiences witht he Syrian and Canadian and his struggle to get an open, public inquiry. Joining him will be Matthew Behrens, from Stop Canadian Involvement in Torture and human rights lawyer Hadayt Nazami. They will discuss the larger context of Canadian complicity in torture as well as ways we can get involved in further action.
This event is also sponsored by Stop Canadian Involvement in Torture and Anti-War@Laurier.
